Woooooohooooooo!!!!!!
Yep, it’s true, I custom ordered a McNaught Vintage Single Cut from Rick at Guitar Hangar oday! Talk about nerve-wracking, Rick and Dave Mansel at McNaught were both great to deal with but there are sooooo many options that you could easily get lost if you didn’t know what you wanted. I knew I wanted an “old-school” LP vibe, but with some solid improvements to the time-tested formula. Here are the specs:
- Style: DTM Vintage Singecut;
- Body: lightweight mahogany w/ “tummy cut”, prefer total weight in the 8-8.75lb range;
- Top: diamond-grade flame maple (prefer strong flame without strong chevron);
- Neck: quartersawn Indian rosewood, rounded “’59 Les Paul” style profile. Looking for the “perfect” ’59 rounded neck profile, not baseball-bat thick, but rounded and chunky;
- Fingerboard: 12” radius, Brazilian rosewood (I supplied old Brazilian rosewood from my private stash) w/ maple binding;
- Frets: Medium-jumbo (probably about the size of Dunlop 6130 - McNaught standard?) stainless steel;
- Inlays: Paua offset blocks;
- Headstock: McNaught “puzzle piece”;
- Tuning machines: Locking Sperzel as standard;
- Pickups: Nickel-covered Wagner Darkbursts;
- Electronics: pickup selector switch on upper bout; volume and tone controls arranged the same as PRS SC245 or Yamaha Weddington Custom; push-pull coil tap on neck tone control:
- Color: “Antique Burst” on top, per conversation with Dave, this is more of an “autumn” antique burst, with matching headstock; wipe edges of maple cap; wrap antique sunburst around sides to back; thinline burst around edges of back (NOT teardrop burst) with clear/natural finish on center back of body;
- Finish: Nitrocellulose on top & body; Dave said they typically finish IRW necks with something like sanding sealer for a natural feel;
Here are a couple of similar DTMs, albeit with mahogany necks, that I used as reference points for Dave & Dave when making my guitar:
With any luck the guitar should be on the way to me by the end of November or beginning of December. I can hardly wait!
