Suspicions confirmed…

My “new” used Yamaha Weddington Classic has replacement DiMarzio pickups installed.

I pulled the pickups out of my new Weddington Classic this morning and found the stock DiMarzio pickups were replaced with a DiMarzio DP103 in the neck and “YHNP2BKL” in the bridge position.  The DP103 is their low-output PAF-style neck pickup, and I have to contact DiMarzio to track down more information about the YHNP2BKL.

Oh, well, while disappointing this isn’t the end of the world.  The pickups sound good in a low-output vintage PAF kind of way.  I can either leave them as-is or replace them with DiMarzio DP163 “Bluesbucker” pickups which I’m kind of interested in trying out anyway.

UPDATE:  According to DiMarzio, the YHNP2BKL may be the stock bridge pickup.  Interesting….

Kurt,
I have the same exact pickups in mine. In fact I have the same exact color.

Question for you, mine has a problem where on the low “E” from the 12th fret up it seem to “wolftone” , a slightly detuned doubling, like a chorus sound, or flubby. This is only with the neck PUP. I’ve tried different strings, checked the intonation, etc. Going to try the Tonepros as a fix.
The only thing that makes it disappear is turning the tone down on the neck PUP.
I notice a lot of guitar have this problem, but didn’t expect it with a top line axe like this.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Kurt, I had my Classic apart today and noticed I also have the same pickups in mine. Doesn’t look like the solder joints were touched.

Thanks Dave.  Apparently I jumped the gun on this one.  Based on what I’ve learned from DiMarzio and Marc, the YHNP2BKL and DP103BKU pickups may indeed be stock.

The weird thing is I have a Pacifica 921 that I recently pulled apart electronically and it has the same pickups as the Weddy except the YHNP2BKL is in the neck and the PAF Pro is in the bridge. Weird, Yamaha is so weird i n how they do things.

Anyone figure out what this YHNP2 is? It’s supposed to be a PAF Pro of some kind.

Not sure what the specs of the YHNP2BKL are, but it sure sounds meaty in my Classic.

Here’s what DiMarzio had to say about the YHNP2BKL:  <quote>It is most likely original. The sticker is correct for one of the models
we made for Yamaha. It’s hotter than a PAF, somewhat similar to a Breed
neck model.</quote>

When I asked DiMarzio about the pickups from my amber Custom (now Dave’s), they responded that they were custom made and the closest production pickup is the F-spaced Norton (DP160F).

Hi. {;o)
What a fantastic collection of information on Weddingtons.
I just got one from ebay, a Classic in clownburst.
I’m already a yamaha guitar, amp and motorcycle freak.
Thank you so much for this bundle og great reviews.
How come there is no Weddington hunt in all of 2010 ??
Thanks, and greetings from Denmark. {;o)
Best Regards
Peter

Peter,

There have been a number of good Weddingtons on eBay this year and the prices seem to have leveled off or even come down a little.  I’m still watching them, but have held off on purchasing another right now.  I think the Weddington is an amazing design, but I’m a little put off by the thin necks.  I may try to build a Weddington-inspired guitar that has a larger neck if my current build goes well.

Kurt.
Shortly after reading this, a courier brought me a cherry red Weddington Custom from the USA.
As far as I’m concerned, there is no guitar better than the Weddingtons.
Looks, design, sound/tone, craftmanship, feel/weight/balance ...........
They definitely got it right first time round.
I LOVE MY YAMMIES, twangers, amps and bikes.

Good luck with your build,
and please upload pictures of the work progress.

Thank you for the best Weddington info page on the web !! . {;o)

Best Regards
Peter
