Yamaha Weddington hangtag, owner’s manual and schematics!!!

When Gary won the auction for a near-mint condition Yamaha Weddington Classic last month, he also received the original owner’s manual and hangtag as part of the transaction.  Hangtags and owner’s manuals are typically lost or discarded over the years, so having these documents for a 15-year-old guitar is a bit of a rarity.  Collectors love this stuff, it helps drive the value of an instrument up.  I’m not that much of a collector.  For me, an instument’s value is defined by how well it plays and how good it sounds, not by the fact that it still has some original paperwork.  I am, however, very interested in the information sometimes included in these documents.  In this case, the hangtag includes some tidbits about the Weddington’s original design from Rich Lasner, the designer, and the owner’s manual includes information on how the Weddington’s switching was wired, a topic of some debate.

Gary generously agreed to send me color copies of these documents so I could post them here as .pdf files for anyone who may be interested in this kind of information.  How cool is that?  Thanks, Gary!

Yamaha Weddington Owner’s Manual

One of the things I found particularly interesting from the Owner’s Manual was the how the 5-way switch is wired in the Weddington Custom and Classic:

  1. Coils A+B in series (normal bridge humbucker)
  2. Coils A+B in parallel (single-coil neck voicing)
  3. Coils A+B in series + C+D in series (normal middle-position of a Les Paul, both humbuckers run in parallel)
  4. Coils B+C in series (the inner coils from each humbucker) + D (the back coil in the bridge humbucker) brought in paralled with the rear tone control.  This very cool single-coil sound is one of my favorites!
  5. Coils D+D in series (normal bridge humbucker)
    1. For those of you more familiar with schematics, here are the layout and schematics:

Thank you so much for providing hangtag and manual for the Weddingtons.
I presently own a “clownburst” Classic, and on the lookout for a Custom, preferably in red.

      Best Regards
